WHO WE ARE
Afiwi is a Jamaican term meaning “ours”. We believe: “Out of many, We are one”. We are a social enterprise established in 2019 following a series of intentional conversations with Pan-Canadian diaspora leaders. Afiwi operates from a Community Centre and other grass roots organizations in Durham Region. Afiwi seeks to find sustainable systemic solutions to persistent social and economic challenges and to build a resilient future for our communities in Canada. Although African Diaspora led, we support a diversity of community-based organizations and groups with community asset, community enterprise development and next generation leadership initiatives. We have developed using a grass roots, community-based approach to empower Black and racially minoritized communities in the Canada to initiate and sustain transformational social and economic change. Our current core team and supporters, is multi-disciplinary drawn from health, education, youth services, LGBTQ+, social care, senior education, adult education, community arts, academia, and the social and for-profit business sectors.
